1. Get to know your key signatures

First, you must know your key signatures. It refers to the sets of flats and sharps. There are approximately 15 key signatures and 12 keys. If you can completely understand the formations, it'll be easier for you to determine even the slightest change in the music.

2. Don't limit yourself to one type of music

We highly recommend that you try other types of music as well. For instance, if you can't seem to anticipate the certain piece that you've been practicing, then you should put it down first. Prepare yourself by trying other genres. You can start with simpler genres and music to ensure that you can familiarize it with the time you get back to your original piece.

3. Focus on the rhythms

Similar to key signatures, if you are familiar with rhythms, it may help you to read music in the long run effectively. Constantly repeating the rhythms will serve as your roadmap the moment you step into unfamiliar music. It will fill your knowledge gap. Even though each piece has different and unique structures, knowledge in common rhythms may help you to read it more efficiently and can serve as your preparation for any piece you're going to read.
